There may be, if scientists at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem have anything to say about it. They've attached silicon nanoparticles to a genetically engineered poplar protein shaped kinda like an inner tube. How cool is that?
When a whole bunch of these hybrid elements are arranged in a huge network, they form a system that has better memory capacity in a smaller space and costs less to manufacture.
